Description
IBTE is a two week, 80 hour program developed for teachers who are (or will be) teaching courses within Florida’s Biotechnology Program (#8736000), or for any teacher wanting to integrate the latest biotechnology techniques into their classroom. The primary aim of this course is to provide experience with the skills, techniques and knowledge within the biotechnology curriculum in the context of working in the industry. In addition, there will be guidance and practice with the preparative steps necessary for the hands-on components of the program, allowing teachers to create "off-the-shelf" kits to be used during the school year. Completion of this course and a passing score on Florida’s “Biotechnician Assistant” credentialing exam (offered at the conclusion of the course) earns “district certification” for existing Biology and Chemistry teachers; enabling them to teach the CTE components of the Industrial Biotechnology program.

Industry experience will include the design, development, testing, and manufacture of a biopharmaceutical.
Participants will develop an understanding of the departmental roles, and careers, as well as the criteria associated
with working in this highly regulated environment.

Course Format
  • Hands-on classroom exercises and wet-labs
  • Lecture and Interactive Discussion
  • Development and Sharing of Best Practices
  • Field Trips and Tours of Biotechnology Companies

Participants will stay on UF's campus, which is located approximately 14 miles from Progress Park in Alachua.
