  • This 8-hour course provides you with a regulatory review and update on asbestos legislation pertinent to asbestos contractors and supervisors
  • Topics covered include OSHA, EPA-NESHAPS, work practices, safety, health concerns, legal issues and liability.  In addition, upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to list the specific knowledge and skill levels needed to comply with OSHA competent person under 1926.1101.
  • This course has been approved by the EPA and the State of Florida for persons wishing to receive Reaccreditation. To be reaccredited, you must provide proof of having successfully completed the initial EPA-approved training course and any annual refresher courses in the discipline in which you seek reaccreditation. If your initial and refresher course certificates were not issued by UF TREEO, you must email a copy of your initial and last refresher certificates to our registrar, Kady Morris , and be verified before the class begins.
  • The cost of the course includes course materials and the examination at the end of the course
  • Daily breaks are scheduled. You will be allowed a one hour break for lunch. 
  • Participant must be present for entire course time to receive CEUs and a Certificate of Reaccreditation
  • Required Exam:  25 Question Multiple-Choice/Closed Book with a 70% or higher to pass
  • An annual refresher course is required for re-accreditation


This course is for persons who are seeking reaccreditation as Asbestos Contractor/Supervisor.  In Florida, Asbestos Contractor Supervisors must work under the direction of a Florida Licensed Asbestos Contractor (LAC).

Persons who plan to do asbestos work in other states should contact that state to verify that accreditation, licensure and other requirements are met.


Toi Akien, LAC

Mr. Toi Akien's early career included combined studies of Chemical Engineering and Architecture. He served for half a decade as a Project Engineer for Balfour Beatty in Commercial Construction facilitating building projects for school districts, universities, and private corporate clients. Toi is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Certified Inspector and Risk Assessor, an ACAC Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC), a Licensed Asbestos Consultant (LAC) and a Licensed Asbestos Contractor (LAC). Mr. Akien has extensive training experience garnered as an educator with the Palm Beach County School District and teacher in private local classes. He is the founder of an Environmental Inspections and Consulting Company with areas of expertise in Chinese drywall, lead-based paint, asbestos, mold, and radon having local government, municipalities, counties, corporate, and private clients. 

He has been an instructor with UF TREEO since 2017. 

Charles Haury, CIH, CSP

Mr. Haury is the President of Petra Safety Solutions, LLC.  He is a certified industrial hygienist (CIH), certified safety professional (CSP), a licensed mold assessor (MRSA) and a licensed asbestos consultant (LAC) in the State of Florida.  He has over 30 years of experience in providing solutions to complex and diverse health and safety issues.  He has extensive experience in OSHA regulatory issues, asbestos and lead management, personal protective equipment and indoor environmental quality.  Mr. Haury has provided expert testimony on asbestos, mold management and toxic exposures. He has also presented on a variety of health and safety topics at numerous professional conferences.

Karen M. Meyer, CIH, LAC

Ms. Meyer is a Certified Industrial Hygienist, FLAC, and is National Client Manager at Partner Engineering and Science.  She received her degree from the University of Miami.   She has intensive experience in asbestos consulting and in all forms of environmental and industrial hygiene, including indoor air monitoring and personnel training.  She has been an instructor with UF TREEO’s asbestos training programs since 1990.

Terry Zinn, Attorney-at-law

Mr. Zinn is an Attorney-at-Law and Adjunct Professor with the University of Florida.  He was formerly an environmental attorney for the Florida DOT, the first to be designated as such.  His expertise is in environmental law and litigation with a background in biology and environmental science.  Terry frequently lectures and publishes articles on hazardous waste, asbestos, and other environmental issues for the Florida Bar and UF TREEO Center.  He is instrumental in the design and implementation of UF TREEO’s asbestos contractor/supervisor refresher courses since 1988.

David Wiggins, P.A.

Mr. Wiggins is the CEO and President of Hazardous Operations, Inc.  He has been the in the Environmental Health & Safety field since the 1980’s.  In 1994, he joined the State of Florida where he was the Supervisor of Environmental Health & Safety for the State Buildings overseeing all aspects of training for Asbestos, Lead, Indoor Air Quality, Underground Fuel Storage tanks, Hazardous Waste Operations, PCB’s and Water Quality projects.

He has been an instructor with UF TREEO since 1996.
